Former WRAL sports anchor Jeff Gravley has landed in a new job

Former longtime WRAL sports anchor and reporter Jeff Gravley has a landing spot after leaving Capitol Broadcasting Company last month: he’ll be strategizing for the Wolfpack.

Gravley, an N.C. State alum, announced on social media Monday that he is director of content strategy for NC State Athletics. This is a newly created position, according to the university.

A news release from NC State said, “In his new role, Gravley will be responsible for producing original content in conjunction with the NC State creative team and more effectively sharing the Wolfpack story. Additionally, he will serve NC State Athletics in a variety of special event settings.”

A spokesperson from NC State told The News & Observer that the “terms of Jeff Gravley’s employment are currently unavailable as his position has responsibilities with and is funded by both NC State and Wolfpack Sports Properties.” Wolfpack Sports Properties is listed online as “a joint venture of Capitol Broadcasting Company and Learfield IMG College.” Capitol Broadcasting Company owns WRAL.

Gravley spent more than 30 years working for WRAL before leaving when his contract expired at the end of 2019.

Gravley said in a tweet Monday: “For the past 3 decades I’ve had the incredible privilege to cover multiple schools, athletes, coaches & moments. But in my new adventure, the focus shifts to my alma mater @NCState. I’m joining @PackAthletics to share their stories on multiple platforms!”

WRAL announced last week that they have hired Chris Lea from WXII in Winston-Salem to fill Gravley’s reporter/anchor job. Lea starts in March.
